5 Stars Really nice
This camera is the best value in DSLRs on the market today.

I got it to replace an Olympus e-510 which is a fine camera, but the K-x blows it away.

My favorite features are the high ISO performance which allows for shooting without a flash in lower light, and using faster shutter speeds with the relatively slow kit lens, the quick auto focus, and it’s small size and low weight.

I like to get out into the wilderness on my skis and bike but love to bring a good SLR with me. The K-x now makes that easier than ever. Also, being compatible with every Pentax lens made in the last 50 years is a huge plus. I picked up an inexpensive 50mm f1.7 prime on eBay and have been having fun shooting with that too. Much sharper (when stopped down) and faster (when opened up) than the kit lens which is ok but not fantastic.

Shooting around the house without having the use a flash is also a huge advantage. The shots just look more natural and when shooting it’s less intrusive for my subjects to not have the flash going off all the time.

The two things I would add to this would be the weather seals found in the higher Pentax models and AF illumination (the rod spot that tells you what point is focused).

I haven’t had any problems due to lack of seals yet, but the peace of mind would be nice while taking it out into the elements.

Video is ok but not great. That’s a nice feature that I probably will not use a whole lot but it’s nice to know I have the capability if the right opportunity arises.

Be sure to upgrade the firmware to 1.01 if your camera doesn’t already have that version. It fixes some problem the original fw had with the battery meter and different kinds of batteries. Without it battery performance is not very good when using rechargeables.

5 Stars Excellent SLR, especially for the money
I’m using my Pentax K-x for stills and video, mostly portraits and product shots. It’s my first DSLR but after reading up a bit on its capabilities I was good to go. For the price, this is simply an amazing camera. I had considered entry-level models from Canon and Nikon, but after reading a bunch of online reviews I decided that the K-x was a better bet. Indeed, the sensor quality and features (it shoots great 720p video) are unbeatable in its segment.

I shoot from the viewfinder. I’m not sure if this is because the LCD isn’t big enough or because I just like shooting from the viewfinder better – probably the latter. I like to use a manual focus when the situation allows, and I can just see a lot more using my naked eye instead of live view.

The video feature is great for casual shooting. I used it on Christmas morning to capture my 18 month old opening gifts.

Since I rarely use live view, rarely use a flash and set up my shots before turning the camera on, the original batteries have lasted me about two weeks. Can’t complain about that. I bought 8 Eneloop AAA rechargeables for when the originals run out, but haven’t had to swap them out yet.

Low light performance is amazing. Check out the reviews. It’s as good as cameras that cost twice as much.

Dislikes:

The audio is mono on the camera, and there’s no audio input. So if you want to shoot something with sound, i.e. an interview, you’ll have to use a separate recorder and sync the audio later. That’s probably too much of a hassle for a project with a lot of cuts, but if it’s something simple it’s workable. I managed to sync some audio in iMovie that looks/sounds really good.

The shutter is on the loud side. I haven’t yet found this to be a real problem for me, but some reviewers have been annoyed by it.

It’s rare for me to get a decent-looking picture using the internal flash. Some of that is probably just the nature of internal flash, but I’m guessing some of it owes to the implementation in the K-x. Fortunately, images still look good at ISO 1600 and usable at ISO 3200, so it’s possible to get up to a high enough shutter speed to take photos of a toddler indoors during the day.

5 Stars Could not be happier
After several agonizing months of research and forum crawling, I found myself firmly stuck between the Canon T1i and the Pentax k-x. [...] analysis of the Pentax ultimately sealed the deal for me, promising a compact and responsive starter DSLR with lots of headroom to grow in to (and for hundreds less than the canon). Having had the camera for a few days now (and promptly updating the firmware to avoid the nefarious battery issue)I can honestly say I could not be happier. The kit lens has proven more than sufficient for me to cut my teeth on and can definitely produce sharp, vibrant pictures, provided you’re not relying on the idiot setting. The button and menu layout is concise and accessible, allowing you to learn the camera inside and out in only a day’s time. The camera itself is extremely compact but still manages to have a very solid and comfortable feel. And as so many have noted, the high-iso capabilities allow you to shoot in available light with fantastic results. And while hardcore photographers complain they’re pointless, the in-camera filters and cross processing abilities give great results with minimal effort and absolutely add value to the camera. My only gripes thus far are the lack of focus points in the viewfinder (which i wouldn’t actually use but feel i should get for spending 6 bills) and the AA batteries, which were easily remedied with a set of Eneloops. All in all though a FANTASTIC camera and ridiculous bargain. If you’re reading this you want the k-x but are probably worried about going non-Canikon. My two cents: Buy Pentax and don’t look back.

3 Stars Good Case, Not Flexible Enough…
Well, let me start by saying that the actual case is very good and has excellent padding, so no complains there. The reason I gave this a 3 star is because it did not meet my specific requirements.

I have a Nikon D90 and 35mm lens and also did have an old Lowepro case which fit both, along with additional space for lens cap and cords. I got another 55-200mm lens and was looking for some case to accomodate all three. This case fits the camera and 200mm lense perfectly, but does not leave any additional space for lens cap, cords, etc. I also had to figure a way to keep the 35mm in place!!

So I ended up buying a separate case for 55-200mm (from Lowepro as well) and attached that to my old case (also Lowepro) it works well and carrying both around is convenient as well. I can also avoid carrying the bigger lens if I dont have to and move around with a nice compact case!!

I still have to change lens in order to put the camera back in case, but I guess while using a DSLR you anyways end up changing lens multiple times…

5 Stars Just great for 70-300mm lens with D40
A great size case for D40. I am using it a lot. It is light, and easy to cary around, protecting the camera and the lense.

I do recomment this for the 70-300mm and smaller lenses. Even thou there is room when I have smaller lenses, it is great as it fits all sizes… Just love it… for the quality and price!!!

I do recommend this size, compared to the shorter one. Is better to have more room, then compress the lenses and the camera…

I was looking for a one stop case for my Nikon D90 + 18-200mm lens. I have seen conflicting reviews on whether the case is long enough for the above combination. And the verdict: yes, it is large/long enough to fit D90+18-200mm lens. And has a pocket for a memory card or two.

And it can fit (barely) the standard lens hood.

Drawbacks: Would have liked an extrenal zippered compartment.

Compact travel holster, fits the D90 with kit lens. Made from great material but could have been better with more useful compartments. Needs a little more padding on the lower-end where the lens rests.

4 Stars A few additions to the 5star reviews
This is my first DSLR purchase since I was tired of the limitations of most P&S cameras – slow and poor in low level lighting. My Canon 3mp from 2002 made excellent prints up to 8×10 and had manual features but was bound to break or wear out – it did.

Image quality, handling, build quality, etc all good as mentioned in the 5 star reviews. I bought this when the price finally hit my buy point (under $500) with one of those pre Christmas coupons (they needed to move the white and red models). At the $600 price level I was going to wait for the next version. Got it and am happy with it for the price.

My main interest in this camera (color option was not of much concern) was to be able to reuse some manual focus aperture priority lens that I used with my 70s model Pentax ME film camera. They work and make awesome pictures but the camera does not read the manually set aperture selection as on the ME – does not get recorded with the picture and you have to look at the lens (or get good counting clicks) to know your setting. The manual focus was easier to view on the ME but at least you can use the live view zoom focus or listen for beeping or look for the focus indicator. It will set the shutter for you if in auto mode or P or A mode just like the ME but with the auto ISO selection to further fine tune the picture.

HD movie mode was also of interest but assumed it would be secondary – it is. Even with shake reduction off, it still records every tiny noise the camera makes. The mic is very sensitive. It will come in handy from time to time but would not base a purchase on that feature.

Some people complain of the autofocus point not being visible in the viewfinder – I tend to use point focus and am still experimenting with auto exposure options. Not quite excellent but can’t really complain – yet.

The Kx buttons I guess are typical for a DSLR and are so nice to have compared to most P&S. The Green button looks like it will come in handy once I get used to having it – quick reset of some overrides.

The auto mode makes this DSLR handle like a P&S only faster. The autofocus in low light tends to search a bit more than my Canon P&S especially in low light but manual override is easy. Once in auto, I could hand this camera to most anyone to take decent pictures.

I recommend to get this camera at a lower price (<$500) or wait for the next version. If you are not planning to use more lenses than this kit lens you probably will be better off with the newer Canon or Panasonic "low light" P&S cameras currently priced around $400 or less.

5 Stars First time DSLR owner—-Very Happy !!
Bought this Baby in white back in Nov.12. All I can say is Wow! Very easy to use and the menus are straight forward. Buttons are well placed out. Camera was very compact (for a DSLR) compared to the ones I was comparing to (nikon d5000, Sony A330). I can actually just use one hand to set my settings.

Fast auto focus. Good picture quality. Tons of shooting modes available.

Never really had any problems with the battery issue even before I upgraded the firmware 1.01.

18-55 kit lens did a good job on our last Cruise vacation. I was averaging 280-320 shots on Eneloops 50% flash before the batt. meter turned orange with some cropping.

I recenty acquired a Prime lens D-XENOGON 35mm F2(ebay new) which is an actual clone of the famed and now discontinued Pentax 35mm f2. I thought my pictures were sharp with the lens kit but I recently shot this lens on my brothers wedding and OHhhh man, what a difference in picture sharpness and very outstanding color contrast. It just has that POP on every picture I’ve taken with this lens. Oh yeah…Took 752 shots, 98% with Flash that day before it shut down with Eneloops of course.

All in all. I’m very impressed with my Kx. Now paired up with my Prime, it’s an unbeatable combo (for now).

Sony, Canon, Nikon—watch out.

5 Stars Overall Great Value
After looking through a lot of options this camera seems to offer the best combination of price performance.

Some first impressions are:

1. Good Hi Iso Performance with little noise. (Much better then Canon Xt then I used to own that only had 1600 max iso.)

2. Able to do HD Video (720p).

Video quality is ok, I compared it to my sony SR-12 HD camcoder its definitely not the same quality but it does have a unique movie type look to it, in low light its very grainy but in good light it does fine. Its a good back up to a camcoder, although you do have to get used to manual focusing to get good results. If you shoot a lot of movies get a bigger memory card, I have a 4 gig card and it only holds around 15 minutes of video in highest quality due to recording format.

3. First thing to do when you get the camera make sure you update the firmware to 1.01 that will solve the battery issue that many people been having. You can check which firmware you have by pressing the menu button and then turning the camera on.

So far a I took about 900 pictures and about 45 minutes of video on lithium batteries that came with the camera and only now the battery indicator shows orange.

4. As with any DSLR auto mode will not give you the best results, and every camera has its own “favorite” settings where it gets most consistent results. So far Im still figuring out what works best with this particular camera.

5. No camera is perfect but to me Good Hi Iso performance, Hd video option and price. Make it 5 stars.

5 Stars Pentax k-x: great little camera / camcorder
Great little camera! Kit lens is very good for a kit lens with sharp images and good colors. Not as good as say my Tamron 18-75 f2.8, but the kit is quite a bit lighter and smaller in size. The camera focuses fast (much faster than my k20d)and accurately and with the 40mm f2.8 limited lens, it’s even quicker. Video quality is excellent. Very nice to have image stabilization to steady my vids. The real revelation of the k-x: shooting with high ISO is just amazing at how clean the images are with good detail.

I thought that going from a semi-pro cam (the k20d) to the k-x would be a big step back, but the controls are intuitive and well laid out, so no problems at all. Having both cameras will be amazing… the k20 will be for landscape and outdoor shots while the k-x will provide another focal length and allow me to capture more opportunities in higher iso situations or where I need a higher frame rate.

Excellent camera that deserves all the accolades it’s getting from the critics.

5 Stars great camera in a small package
the k-x is the camera i’ve been waiting for. it delivers exceptionally well in low-light situations. it offers the user many choices, ranging from full auto mode to manual mode. it is possible to record in raw and jpeg at the same time. for those who are more advanced and demanding, one can choose from among options such as no noise reduction, digital filters, iso range from 100 to 12800, etc.

the battery issue was non-existent for me. the batteries shipped with the camera worked immediately. when they were finally exhausted, four duracell alkalines worked fine – but it is important to let the camera sit for a minute or two first after changing batteries.

my other cameras include a panasonic fz-18, a leica d-lux-4, and a ricoh cx-1, among others. i also have an *ist ds. i continue to use them all off and on, but the k-x has become the one i reach for when i hope for the most flexibility and the best results. i will never be a serious photographer, but i will enjoy photography much more with the k-x. definitely an excellent value.

This bag came with an AWESOME Instructional DVD that is very very very useful for beginners, i highly recommend this bag.

Compartments inside are movable and interchangeable to fit your needs so thats very good if you have different stuff like either a lense or a flash

Bad thing is the bag is bulky and can fit only 1 lense, and maybe a flash, which is a very very very tight fit, so the best would only be just the camera or 1 lense or 1 flash.

Overall im very happy with the bag, protected my equipment from the rain and all, if your looking for a decent bag with an instructional dvd from nikon BUY THIS ONE!

The instructional video is excellent it is the best way to get started if you have never used this camera, even if you are an experienced photographer.

The camera case is nicely designed with a lot of extra Velcro partitions and specialty compartments and pockets for accessories. And if you remove unused partitions you may have room for one additional (e.g. 55-200 VR)lens. However, the owners manual will not fit in the case or a side pocket. This would be a perfect case if it were made slightly larger. If you will likely add an additional lens to your arsenal you might seriously evaluate other storage options that are more roomy, especially if you would like to keep the manual for a such a sophisticated camera close at hand when you travel.

Ordered this card because Kingston is usually very reliable. I initially formatted the card and after about 10 photos, received an error saying card is bad, please replace. So I took it out, formatted it again in hopes that it would be fixed. But after taking about 10 more photos the same error occurred. I give it 3 stars only because I probably just got the bad egg from the group. That does happen some times.

5 Stars Kingston 4GB cf memory card
I own 4 of these 4 GB memory cards for 2 of my trail cams. I swap the ones I’ve taken home and saved the wanted images on my computer for the ones that have new data in the cameras. They all have performed well to store images and/or video. My oldest set is about a year old and I’ve recently purchased a newer set.

I’ve used Kingston cards in ALL my dSLR’s going back to 2002 including my older Fuji Finepix S1, S2 Pro and now my newer (Feb 2008) Nikon D300. Though I have much larger capacity cards now in the D300, The S2 pro only uses cards up to 2G so the Kingstons that I’ve used for years are STILL being used. I either use the Finepix S2 as a backup, or my young ‘un uses the camera when we go out shooting together. I have NEVER, ever had a card fail or even hiccup. Basically, the same experience I had with the Transcend Memory cards extends to these. Either I’ve been really lucky, and/or the cards are fabulous, and/or I take care to FORMAT the card in camera after each download. Maybe a combination of all three I don’t know. I do know I own four or five of the 2G Kingstons, and at least two 4Gig CF Kingstons. They are great just about fail proof.

And, in closing I would have to say that my 2 and 4G Kingstons have seen over 100,000 images through them over the course of several years. I trust them to do the job and never, ever have any qualms about popping them in the camera.

On a quick note I purchase my memory cards from various sources, not just Amazon. I shop for value, but I try to stick to the name brands of Kingston, Ridata, Transcend, and now own a couple of Lexar’s. Shop around for the best price, but many times Amazone offers the best with the free ship options when available.

I mainly use a Sandisk Ultra II 4GB CF and it gives me no problems. I’ve had it longer than the Kingston.

The Kingston worked fine for a couple of months. Then it started giving me invalid parameters in Windows XP SP2.

I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone who relies on their photos for their paycheck, but its a good bargain for casual shooting.

Perhaps my card was bad. Good luck.

5 Stars Took my time looking for my first real DSLR
I’d been thinking about moving up to a DSLR for over a year, and actively researching brands and models for about four months. I started out looking at the Canon offerings including the Rebel XSi, T1i and D50 then extended my search to the Nikon D5000 and D90 and also the Sony 4/3rds Alpha offerings. After reading a lot of reviews and comparing full-sized sample photos from each camera I concluded a number of things:

1. I probably couldn’t afford the lenses that would do justice to more than about 12 megapixels

2. Nikon and Sony sample photos were the best. The Canon photos showed more aberration, possibly from the kit lens but it was hard to say

3. The entry-level Sony models were just a bit too small for my hands and the range of lenses (I could afford) was somewhat limited

That left the two Nikons. I liked the “hand feel” of the D90, and the much higher resolution of its LCD was really nice as was the top information LCD screen. Its only real drawbacks were weight and whether the high-res LCD was worth the extra money (which I could otherwise apply toward a lens). Then, too, the D5000 had a few features the D90 lacked – features I actually thought I could use. (Interval timer, in-camera image corrections, etc.) Since I didn’t have any old Nikon lenses the internal focus motor in the D90 was not useful. And, while obviously lower-res, the D5000′s LCD is quite adequate.

So, I went with the D5000. Since I didn’t want the usual kit lens I bought the body only and bought a Nikkor 35mm f1.8G prime lens initially. (My previous film camera was used mostly with a 50mm f1.4 Zeiss lens so the Nikkor was a reasonable replacement.) I then bought a refurbished Nikkor AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm F/3.5-5.6G ED VR zoom lens (the kit lens for the D90, and a much better “walking around” lens than the D5000′s kit lens in my opinion). I ended up spending a bit more, but I got the lenses I wanted (the 35mm is really sharp and is great for low-light work).

So far, it has produced terrific photos. My previous digital cameras were various point-and-shoot compact models (some of them work very well, but the small sensors have their limits) and a Fuji S9000 (also a small sensor, but is rather DSLR-like otherwise and I did some good work with it). The first few photos I took (with the 35mm lens) really knocked my socks off – the sharpness was astonishing (and without tweaking the default settings). The out-of-the box settings aren’t bad at all, and there is a selection of “scene” settings (some on the mode dial, some available through menus) to fine tune things. (You can modify or design your own scene settings as well.)

To really get the full benefit of this camera be prepared to put in some time with at least the manual. I found the menus easy to navigate after a little exploring, but there are a lot of options you can adjust especially if you want the camera to do some of the kinds of processing you might otherwise do with after-the-fact software.

Cons: Not many. I wish it had the LCD of the D90 (or Canon’s T1i). I also wish Nikon included more software – you pay extra for the computer control software on the Nikon while Canon provides it for free (not a dealbreaker for me, I don’t expect to really need it for the foreseeable future, but …)

Summary: It’s a lot of bang for the buck, lots of features to play with, and it makes great pictures. Can’t really ask for a lot more than that.

5 Stars Nikon D5000 vs Canon Rebel, keeping it short …
If you’re looking at this camera, my guess is you’ve done your home work and figured out that if you want a good DSLR on a budget, your choice is pretty much down to D5000 or Rebel. I came to that conclusion fairly quickly but making that decision was not easy. On paper Canon had better specs for the price but both cameras looked close …

There are numerous reviews comparing those cameras. Most of them are long, detailed and come to the same conclusion – both cameras are good – not really helping much at the end. So here I’ll try to keep it focused and tell about the key differences which helped me to set my mind.

1. Low light shooting. Recently I went to a party and a friend of mine gave me his Rebel. What I didn’t realize before is in order to autofocus the Rebel needs to pop up flash and fire it a few times. Of course, it’s not at full power, but still it ruins everything because you can’t take a picture without distracting people. You catch some interesting face, point, shoot and those few flashes totally distract the person. Nikon has a white lamp, it’s enough to focus but most people won’t get distracted. So if you plan to take pictures of people in party like set up – Nikon gives you an advantage. (well, to be fair you can get an external flash which has a lamp for autofocus assist, but we are talking about the cameras here)

2. Tilting LCD. Rebel has bigger and better LCD. However, I’m not a paparazzi, but time to time i need to shoot over a line of people in front of me (parades, street performance, small crowded room etc). With the tilting LCD you can raise the camera above your head and still be able to frame the picture. I found that very useful and Nikon has an advantage.

3. Extra preset modes. Probably like the most people I used to keep the dial on “Auto” most of the time. And it worked ok most of the time. But I never could quickly figure out how to take a picture of my daughter blowing birthday candles or perfect sunset or something white on white etc. So when I tried the extra “Scene” preset modes on Nikon, I was really surprised how much better can those pictures be comparing to the “Auto”. Try them out and keep in mind Rebel doesn’t have many of those modes.

4. Feel. Nikon has very solid feel in your hands. Maybe it’s subjective, but I do like this feeling.

So overall, Rebel does have a lot of specs slightly better than Nikon. It’s smaller, lighter, the screen is bigger and has better resolution, it has more megapixels. Yes, it’s all nice to have but this is a choice between good and even better. However Nikon offers some things Rebel just doesn’t have (see above). So I bought Nikon and feel happy about it.

A few side notes. The cameras are getting better and better and in a couple years you’ll be able to buy a much better camera for the same price. The lenses and flashes on the other side are not changing much and hold value really well. So if you have a choice, try to buy the best lense (and for an expensive lense don’t forget to buy a protective filter) and flash you can afford and maybe save some money on the body and upgrade it in a couple years if some new cool technology pops up.

Hopefully my review will help you to decide one way or another.

5 Stars first serious SLR digital camera
I am a serious amateur photographer new to digital equipment and processing. Find the camera very easy to use, am amazed at the menu options available “in camera”. Once one becomes familiar with the menu options available and learns how to access them quickly, the camera is a joy to use. I am currently trying a free trial of Apple’s Aperture photo processing software and find it very easy to use. Expect that I will buy (think it is about $200) it when free trial is over. I am truly amazed at the features incorporated into the camera. Believe that I will soon be buying a quality photo printer to take advantage of the capabilities of the camera.

5 Stars Best DSLR for the money!
I purchased this camera about 4 months ago and it is an excellent choice! I would recommend the body only, then add the Nikon 18-105mm and 70-300mm. It works extremely well in all lighting conditions and is as fast as the lens you mount on it. The only other thing I would add is an SB600 speedlight. If your thinking about this camera, just buy it, you won’t regret it!

4 Stars Works well for lightweight DSLR
I use this with my Pentax K-X and I have to say it does it’s job pretty well. I like that the camera mount is so small that I can leave it on all the time and barely notice it’s there. It seems to tighten down well enough to be sturdy; I’ve set it at odd angles and never had any slippage. I wouldn’t recommend this with a heavy camera or a large lens of course.

Useful when using the gorilla pod, quick release. The release is a little stiff. Level is useful when setting the gorilla pod for shooting.

4 Stars Great ball head for ANY tripod!
I own a Velbon Carbon Fiber tripod and I instantly shaved a pound or more off that system by removing the large 3-way magnesium head and replacing it with this little gem. Ball heads are already popular tripod heads for their small size and easy maneuverability, but they typically cost a lot more than this Joby.

Pros:

- price point may seem high for small tripods but this is a bargain compared to name brand quality equipment used on large tripods by photo enthusiasts.

- Feature rich including the quick release plate and bubble-leveler.

- Works as advertised.

Cons:

- the coin screw attachment on the quick release plate is not easy to attach quickly unlike other systems.

- only rated for 6 lbs but this is reasonable for the price range.

- Even for cameras under the 6 lb rating, positioning will sag a bit after locking. This is a common problem for heads as high as $200, but the Joby sag is less than many more expensive heads.

- does not support panning since lock screw freezes all degrees of freedom. More expensive Ball heads normally come with a separate lock for the panning direction.

I use this regularly with the Joby GP3 Zoom Gorillapod. It is an excellent combo when you are on the go: lightweight, adaptable, and practical. The top part screws onto your camera (just use a small coin) and latches on and off the camera using a quick press of a button.

Note that you don’t need to use this ballhead on an SLR camera. I use it both with my point & shoot as well as my SLR. With the point and shoot it is very useful for closeup shots and in low light. With the SLR it is useful when you don’t want to lug along a regular tripod.

BTW The fluid level on it is very helpful.

This product should be stock with the GP3 Zoom model. This completes the gorillapod and makes it much more flexible to use. I would also recommend it for other ballhead needs as the price point and quality make it very attractive. It performed well; placed on the ballhead and Gorillapod Zoom was my Canon 20D, battery grip, and 28-135 zoom lens with no problems.

3 Stars Nice camera, mediocre lens
I purchased this camera a little over a month ago as my first DSLR; previously I have used manual film SLR cameras, and I wanted a digital camera that gave me the same kind of control as the film SLRs. The camera itself is nice and takes excellent images. The interface could be faster; in a fast moving situation I often don’t have the time to navigate through the menu to select the precise ISO or white balance setting I’d like to use, but this is a minor quibble. Some of the preset “scene” settings are better than others; the snow setting produced excellent pictures with excellent, well saturated color during a recent blizzard, but the portrait settings often leave the subject looking greenish. I can get around this using the auto or manual setting, however.

My major gripe about the camera is the lens kit; at about 45-55mm zoom, the smallest aperture setting goes all the way up to 5.2, which sometimes makes it difficult to create a soft, out of focus background for a tightly framed subject in the foreground. I’ve also noticed significant barrel distortion at the higher end of the zoom range, again 45-55 mm.

Got this camera a month ago, maybe 1000 pictures, to replace a few different point and shoots. My wife used to use a Canon 35mm and my sister has a Digitial Canon, not sure which model. I was determined to buy a Canon. Read all of the reviews and had my mind made up. Went to the store and was able to handle both cameras for about a half an hour. Nikon had me from that minute. I really love this camera. Feels great, easy controls, good build quality, lots of options. I have a baby due soon and was tired of missing shots with spotty point and shoots. I am a rookie and I am still learning how to use this thing but so far so good. My friends have all asked if I got a new camera because I instantly started to taking better pictures. No, I’m not quitting my day job. The software that came with the camera was weak. I will have to invest in Elements or something.

I am sure all the experts can tell you why “x” is so much better than “y” but I’m telling you, as an average joe, if you want to get an entry level DSLR with more than just basic features, then you can’t go wrong with the D5000.

first and foremost i wanted to thank my good friend KHQ for cutting me a sweet deal on this camera! i was really about to get into the SLR until i saw some of the photos he took with it. He apparently was opting for another camera which allowed me to get my grubby hands on this! I wish i would have gotten the Nikon School DVD, Fast, Fun and Easy III Featuring the Nikon D5000 Digital SLR to understand it immediately. But after messing with it in Dubai and after 800 varying pictures which leads me to believe i have a very long way in photography! But this camera has it all! you see creative sides of yourself with this!

5 Stars Newbie to Digital SLR and love this camera
The D5000 has surpassed all our expectations. Image quality, the Vibration Reduction, manual settings, ease of use, easily understood menus and quick keys on the exterior of the camera. The Battery life is amazing and lasts much longer than our old point and shoot camera even with the flash being used 50% of the shots and over 500 pictures taken. The video (Live View) is good but is not why we bought the camera and we haven’t used the software.

4 Stars Nice snug, easily portable holster style case for compact DSLR
This is a very convenient bag for compact DSLRs. It like the holster style fit. I use it for an Olympus E420, which is a bit smaller than typical DSLRs. As a result, I can actually fit a standard zoom (Olympus 14-54mm, which is actually a bit larger than the standard kit zooms like Canon 18-55) along with the 25mm pancake prime lens. I inserted a padded divider so that the lenses aren’t banging into each other. The pockets provide room for a lens cloth, lens pen/brush, extra card, and extra battery.

I would have given it five stars except for a couple shortcomings compared to another similarly sized and priced Lowepro bag I bought several years ago:

- The fabric quality seems a bit cheaper.

- I wish there were more pockets and that they were more spacious, as on the other Lowepro bag I mentioned. I think this could have been done without changing the dimensions of the main compartment and without much additional cost. On the other bag I mentioned, there are pockets on all sides of the exterior. In addition, the exterior pockets of the other bag were a stretchy neoprene, which is more useful than the stiff fabric of the single exterior pocket on this one. I know I’m nitpicking but I’m just a bit disappointed since these seem like easy fixes and the other bag was made by the same company after all.

Perfect snug fit for my Nikon D90 with 18-105mm lens. I generally prefer to let the shoulder strap hang out of the bag.

I got this case for my Nikon D3000 and so far it has served me pretty well. the case isn’t too thick so its not amazing protection but its definitely good protection. the camera also fits a bit strangely in the case but it still works fine. Excellent quality and it certainly adds versatility to your photo outings! It does add both weight and bulk to your camera, though this is not necessarily a terrible thing, as it makes your camera feel more stable in pose.

Camera straps seem to always be in the way when used in vertical mode.

I love the fact that battery life worry is a thing of the past!

Installation is simple and quick. It only involves the removal of the camera’s battery cover (which is a factory option – nothing shady or difficult here).

I am glad I purchased this grip… I just wish that I hadn’t waited a full year!

This is also a huge help with the 50D’s live view which takes battery power. The AA emergency backup trays for the grip have always lived in my camera bag and have never been used, but it’s good to have since you can find AA batteries most anywhere.
