5 Stars Excellent primary or secondary speedlight
As a longtime (30+ years) pro Nikon shooter, I’ve always relied on Nikon Speedlights to mate with my various Nikon cameras. I’ve never been disappointed with the excellent results.

The introduction of Nikon’s iTTL (intelligent through-the-lens) flash system is a major step forward for flash photography. I’ve owned the SB-600 for more than a year and it’s never let me down. I use it as a primary flash for travel (lighter in weight than the SB-800 and SB-900) with my D300 camera. It’s also an excellent secondary flash when used in wireless mode with the other Nikon speedlights. With three or four speedlights, I can achieve quality studio and location lighting effects that rival my pro strobe units AND have complete creative control over the lighting.

If you’re serious about photography, I’d recommend the SB-600 over the SB-400. The additional cost gives you not only more power, but many advanced features that you’ll come to use and appreciate.

Get the Omni-Bounce difusser for the SB-600 and you’re good to go!

5 Stars Best choice for most Nikon SLR owners
I purchased the SB-600 for my Nikon D5000. While the D5000 and other entry-level Nikon DSLRs (e.g., DX40/60/3000) do not have the built in Wireless Commander, I think the SB-600 is still a better investment than the SB-400 for entry/mid-level Nikon SLR users.

The SB-400 has a limited ISO 100 guide number of 21/68 (feet/meters) at the 18mm zoom head position. The SB-600 has a limited guide number of 30/98 at ISO 100 when set to the 35mm zoom position. In other words, unless you want a flash unit that is only slightly more powerful than the built in flash of your camera, or just want to extend the life of your camera’s battery, the SB-600 is a more powerful and versatile flash unit. It will swivel sideways and straight up for more bounce options, and has a built in diffuser panel. Other advantages over the SB-400 include a built-in AF Assist lamp and power zoom. I found the AF Assist works very well in dim light.

The LCD has an easy interface for changing modes or manual adjustments, and is illuminated making it easy to see in dim light. As with Nikon’s other current speed flashes, it supports Auto ISO sensitivity, and red eye reduction.

While my camera does not have built-in wireless commander, with the SB-600 I do have the option of purchasing the SU-800 ($250) to utilize the 600′s wireless capabilities. As for comparison to the SB-900, I’m just a novice user, so the differences between the SB-600 versus the higher-end SB-900 (and 800) is not really significant for me considering the jump in price. The major differences that I see are wireless commander mode, lens coverage, optional power supply, and non TTL auto mode (which I don’t need). The recycle times on the SB-600 are comparable to both SB-800 and 900 units. Moreover, the SB-900 has an overheat protection feature that can abruptly shut the unit down at critical times, so the SB-600 (and 800) is a great back-up even for pro users.

The photos I’ve taken with my D5000 have come out excellent. I’ve used the bounce flash, even with high ceilings, and had excellent results; and compared to the built in flash in my camera, the difference is huge. Except for professional photographers and prosumers with specific needs, for its price I think the SB-600 is the best choice for most Nikon SLR owners.

5 Stars Surprising improvement
I have generic flash units and i have light kits but i was not prepared for the improvement this unit made to my photos. I have struggled with low light photography since the dawn of man but the very first time i set this unit into my hot shoe i fell in love with it. I use this with my D90 and i just love the results. I was leery about spending hundreds of dollars on a flash unit but if you care about your photos you are just going to have to sacrifice some dollars. No regrets, this unit is excellent quality and is a must have for nikon cameras.

5 Stars Nikon SB-600
There are other flash units out there for about 1/2 the cost and to be honest I haven’t used any of them. Ken Rockwell’s review was very helpful in helping me make my decision to buy the Nikon product. I was surprised at the difference the flash makes in my photos when using the SB-600 as compared to the built-in flash on my Nikon D90.

5 Stars Phenomenal lighting! Wish I would have bought sooner!
I have taken my indoor photos to a whole new level with this flash. I bought it for my friend’s wedding and I wish I would have gotten it sooner.

I am using in conjunction with my Nikon D40 and a new Stroboframe Press-T Flash Rotating Bracket for portait photography. See review and photos there…

Flash features that I love:

1. Full tilt – from 90 degrees to 180 degrees with several stops – I bounce off the ceiling most of the time for lovely natural lighting

2. Built in pull out diffuser that can also be used for angle bounce

3. Head rotation from -90 degrees to 180 degrees (perfect for portrait photography with a flash frame to point to the ceiling)

4. Flash refresh rate is fantastic! I set the camera on a tripod and with the remote took many family photos in a row! Especially necessary when there are crying babies in the group!

5. Batteries last a long time

6. Includes nice protective case for flash

Light, compact and small enough to fit in your pocket, Speedlite 270EX features 2-step coverage for 28mm and 50mm focal lengths, plus a highly useful bounce-flash function for amazingly easy, polished results. An indispensable complement to your Canon camera, Speedlite 270EX is a perfect extension of your photographic genius.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Speedlite 270 EX
This flash was purchased to use on my canon G9 and I did not want something too large. The 270 EX is the perfect size for this and all G series cameras. The tilt head is also an added benefit for bounce flash. I find this flash to be more than adequate for interior shots and would not shot without it.

5 Stars Nice compact flash to take anywhere
I bought the 270EX to add to my Powershot SX10IS. Using the flash unit is simple: snap on, turn on, aim, fire. That’s it. Have two AAs handy. That’s all you need. No knobs, no digital settings, no programming of any kind. No frills. But this little unit will do the job. Since the SX10IS is now my backup camera, the 270EX provides the portability and basic added service I need. No professional shots with this speedlite. But pictures with the SX10IS are so much better illuminated now and not overly harshly. I also use a diffuser and I recommend you use one too, if you eventually settle on this little unit. The price is right and the results just perfect for the kind of photography the 270EX is designed for. Give this flash a serious consideration. You won’t be disappointed.

4 Stars simple, affordable, easy.
I have a Canon PowerShot Pro1 and I’m working on upgrading it with some accessories. This is the first accessory flash I’ve ever owned and I’ve found it to be quite capable, especially considering its relatively inexpensive price tag (compared to other more “professional” models).

The flash runs on two AA batteries, so it’s easy to carry spares and pop new ones in in just a few seconds, even while you’re on the go. The unit slides easily onto my Canon camera, but will not mount up to my old 35mm Minolta. I had been under the misguided impression that all ‘hot shoe’ fittings were universal across the camera world and I was proven quite wrong. Anyway, once mounted, the flip of a small switch locks the flash securely to the camera. The flash also comes with a protective nylon-feeling bag in which to store the unit when not in use.

The flash is quite versatile for a beginner or intermediate photographer as the flash output is fully adjustable (through your camera’s menu settings). The flash itself has physically adjustable settings for regular “straight on” flash photography, as well as telephoto pictures. The flash will also tilt upwards to varying angles to allow you to ‘bounce’ the flash off the ceiling in order to create a softer, more natural overhead lighting effect instead of blasting your subject straight on with a blinding flash.

I’ve taken nearly 200 photos on my first set of batteries, and I am noticing that the flash takes quite a while to warm up initially, however once warm, it seems to recycle in between shots at a reasonably quick rate.

In summary, if you want to expand your Canon D-SLR camera’s flexibility and usefulness without dropping $400-500 on an accessory flash, this is the one for you. This unit has a smaller size and a smaller price tag than many other models, but packs a lot of punch.

5 Stars Great entry level flash
Perfect flash for my new Canon SX20IS. Compact size and easy controls with the ability to bounce the flash.

5 Stars Speedlite 270EX – nice little package
I’m really happy with this flash. I tested it against my 430EX in my livingroom by bouncing both off the sloped ceiling. I tested both with and without a diffuser. I have an Omnibounce for the 430EX and a Zeikos diffuser for the 270EX. The 270EX did just as well as the 430EX with consideration to exposure, albeit the 430EX took no time to recycle and the 270 about 1-2 seconds. No recycle time if shooting straight ahead. Not bad for such a small package. Fits my G11 and SX10 very nicely. At less than 1/3 the size of the 430EX it’s very light and easy to carry.

Couple of caveats –

270EX has no manual controls so flash exposure must be done with the camera.

The head doesn’t swivel so the camera cannot be used in the portrait position if you want to bounce the flash off the ceiling. You can bounce it off the wall though if side lighting. Bouncing off the ceiling can be accomplished by using a hot shoe adapter cord and removing the flash from the camera and then aim the flash at the ceiling.

Although the 270EX isn’t as powerful as the 430 series, extra reach can be obtained by bumping up the camera’s ISO one notch.

All in all a powerful flash for it’s size.

5 Stars A Fine Flash, But Pretty Big
This Nikon unit certainly does its job. It is very well-made and solid with lots of adjustments possible. However, for an amateur such as myself it is probably more flash than I will ever use. I also have a Nikon SB400 Flash, a much smaller, lighter and less expensive device, which serves my needs well. What I am trying to say is that one should carefully consider one’s planned uses before buying. Regardless of this, the SB600 is a fine flash and for those who need its many capabilities it can’t be beaten. Buy it and enjoy it!

5 Stars Great!
I just got into some flash photography and lighting situations. This light is great and definitely puts off enough flash to share around! I can’t complain about this. I’ll definitely be buying an SB900 so I can use that as a commander and use my SB600 as a slave since you can’t do that by itself.

4 Stars Very Happy With Purchase
This was my second flash purchase. My first was an SB-400 which I like for it’s portability. The SB 600 is much more versatile and has a lot more to offer. If you are going to purchase one flash, the SB-600 would be the one I would start with.

I have achieved amazing shots by bouncing light off walls and ceilings. I like that the SB-600 can swivel and tilt the flash head. It allows me to bounce light in from any aspect ration’s composition.

The flash also fires and recycles very quickly.

It comes with a decent case. I wish it had a compartment for the Stofen diffuser.

I would repeat this purchase and order a Stofen diffuser at the same time if you get the SB-600 flash.

Why only 4 stars? I think they could have made the off camera use easier. I have found the directions for working the flash off camera confusing. I have been able to make it work. It could be a lot more user friendly. Off camera lighting opens up great opportunities in photography.

4 Stars Fits my needs with auto functions
It is much easier to do nice pictures indoor also in big halls with this flash. Much better then with internal flash on my D300. Zooming function works also well. I need to practice bounce flash more but for direct use for example on objects that are far away or use in a big rooms it works well. In short distance it could be little softer or I would recommend additional diffuser even I didn’t try any by myself (it has builtin 14mm wide angle diffuser which is quite ok)

5 Stars Excellent starter flash!
I have a Nikon D60, and its little built-in flash can’t quite keep up with the photography I do (shooting in dark hotel lobbies, homes, et cetera). What a difference this SB-600 flash makes!

The AF grid that the flash projects (IR, so it’s not visible) really helps my camera focus in lower light conditions. It still has trouble with some things, like mascot costume faces (where is the face? confused!), but it’s still an improvement over not using the SB-600.

I may want to get the SB-800 at some point, but I’m happy for now!
