5 Stars Very happy with my new camera!
This is the second Canon Rebel camera that I have had. The first was a 35mm that I loved and was very happy to purchase the same in digital. I haven’t had it very long to be able to compare the quality of the photos but so far I really like that the feel of the camera is similar and the shutter speed is fast. I also purchased the same camera so that my old lenses would fit. It is very easy to use, turn it on, take off the lens cap and shoot.

very nice dslr. Huge difference from a conventional dig. camera. So far the photos that we have shot are very viverant and sharp. i still use kodak image editor though because of my printer. very nice camera. this does not take short movie clips, kinda weak considering all the other cameras at this price point do.

3 Stars Canon XSi great for recreational photos, not a workhorse.
We received a couple of new Canon XSi Digital rebels for crime scene work. Right out of the box one of them had battery issues. Last night at a homicide scene in sub freezing temps mine completely crashed. The associated speedlight couldn’t communicate with the camera resulting in underexposed, blurry night pictures. Then the camera began shutting down intermittently. I had to put it back in the car for several minutes until it began to operate again. Finally, after over an hour of annoying, unannounced shutdowns it started doing what it’s supposed to. The pictures it takes are nothing short of spectacular. I love the design and the interface. Overall a great camera. I’m afraid, however I will have to stick with my erstwhile Canon S2is. It may have fewer megapixels and tons of scratches and scars but it always turns on and takes pictures no matter what. Canon makes great cameras. They dropped the ball on these.

I am a pro shooter who got this camera to use for fun and trips were i would be mad if i damaged my high end $$$ body.(like skiing) Any way i love the camera so far. I have not had the problems that i have read about with the auto focus or image quality. You however can not take this camera out of the box and get the best pictures it can take. they will be ok but you need to take the time and set up your camera. READ the book if you dont know what your doing. I got the kit camera with the 18-55 IS lens and it is ok. The camera takes much better pictures with my 35-350 72mm L lens on it, as will any camera, spend your money on the glass not the body.

If you want a good camera for the price this is the one for you. If you have older EOS cameras your old lenses will work with the new camera. I also use my 430EZ flash that is from my A2 EOS film camera, it is way over powering in the auto mode (as it is not a E-TTL flash only a TTL) but it works if you manual set it, for inside i use 1/16 or 1/32 (up to 10-15 feet works great) out side i set it to full power and i can light up a subject 100 feet away! (it is great for that)

If you have used a EOS before this works about the same. even from my old film EOS to this one, the basic-mid advance functions are the same.

BEWARE were you but from online. do not buy from a company who dose not have a good reviews (reviews not rating, and read the bad ones too). Personally i will not buy from 17st photo out of NY, to many nightmare stories . i try to buy from amazon directly and will do a lot of review reading if my item is supplied by anyone other than them. Spend a few extra $$ to make sure you can send it back it their are any problems. you will get what you pay for.

5 Stars Great SLR for price
This camera is a great digital SLR for the price.

Coming from regular point and shoot Canons and Sony around 7MP, this camera blows them away in image quality and is just as easy to use as the point and shoots.

Make sure to invest in quality UV or other quality lens protection depending on your intended use for the camera.

Also, getting the higher zoom lens is a must-have with this camera, although most of your pictures will be taken in the 18-55 range with the lens that comes with the camera.

Only thing that could improve on this camera would be to be able to see the picture on the LCD before shooting(like a point and shoot), but I suppose that defeats the whole digital SLR camera’s history and function.

4 Stars D3K great value
After using the Nikon D3000 for about a month, and over 500 pictures, I can only report that it is worth every nickel of it’s price ($500 on 12/4/09).

1. Easy to use.

2. controls well laid out

3. Kit lens AF quick and silent.

4. Size reasonable for small hands (mine).

5. Ability to take Nikon ‘F’ mount lenses (AF or not).

While there is the occasional ‘oops’ moment, errors are easily corrected, and, of course, being digital, errors deleted with no expense incurred. Can’t say that about film cameras.

In addition to the kit lens, I have bought from a friend his Sigma 70-300 lens. While it is designated as an AF lens, as it does not have it’s own motor, it isn’t on the D3K. Manual focusing is a bit of a pain, as is having to learn how to do it all over again. But when I get it right WOW! Nice crisp image.

The only real criticism is not about the camera itself, a star performer. It is that lack of a REAL manual. The 60 page ‘manual’ merely highlights the cameras’ many controls and menus and does not go into detail about them. The Main manual is a 216 page PDF file loaded onto a PC and called a Reference manual. I call it the Users Manual, and the little 60 page thing a Quick Reference. The ‘Dummys’ book I bought on the D3K has a lot of useful information but having a PRINTED manual would have been better than having to buy my own hard copy.

3 Stars Solid DSLR but the Canon Rebel won me over
This is a solid DSLR and was my first foray into that camera category. In the end, I returned it as I found the Canon Rebel XSi (EOS) to be a better camera. What was better? Image quality was #1, the difference isn’t night and day between them but definitely noticeable. The EOS also offers the Pint and Shoot style function of letting the user utilize the LCD screen as a live view finder. Lastly, Amazon had a great special on the purchase of the zoom lens (55-250) as a package with the camera, and this made the Canon a better deal.

I knew I wanted a DSLR and after a few months of debate, I decided to go for the D3000. I was tempted to buy a used D40 but the improvements made to the D3000 were hard to ignore. I ended up buying the D3000 in a bundle on Black Friday which saved me about 150 dollars! As a college students, I was beyond happy to save the money.

The features include almost anything I need (there’s only one feature missing: a color selection tool that my dad’s Canon has but the D3000 doesn’t) and the portability is incredible. I am still in shock about how light the camera is.

For a beginner like me, having the D3000 with an extra telephoto lens is perfect for learning the ropes and hopefully taking a photography class with. I highly recommend this for beginners and perhaps intermediate photographers. Advanced and professionals photographers probably would require more heavy duty equipment.

I am a Beginner Photography with not alot of money and not alot of experience, i chose Nikon of Canon because of a few things.

1. User FRIENDLY, GUIDE MODE IS A MUST! The whole camera is FILLED with tips and EXAMPLES and settings of what to do and how to achieve such and such. Guide mode holds your hand for newbies to give you an idea of whats what, i love how the Nikon D3000 is Half a book and All camera! Thanks Nikon for making such a great quality camera.

2. Takes Great pictures, as an entry level dslr it takes great pictures but i think its the same sensor as the d60 just with 11 points of focus , the 11 point focus is definitely useful, theres more areas for your subject to be in, and Depth of field pictures are definitely easier to do with more focus points.

The Nikon d3000 with the 18-55mm lens is perfect for everyday use but not enough, i suggest it should be complimented with a 55-200mm, because sometimes you cannot get close enough to the subject without getting in the way of the people around you!

The Screen is big and wide and perfect for reviewing images and looking at settings, you dont have to look hard. The settings do get washed out in direct sunlight so try to keep it in your shadow

Also post processing of pictures comes out AWESOME!!! i could not believe the level of detail i saw on my computer, it wasnt blurry and zooming in is really pixel squares.

Nice camera for beginners, if your novice or pro this camera isnt for you, while a newbie like me appreciate the tips it does take a while to get around the settings but you get used to it, there is no quick access to any 1 setting but soon your fingers will be faster than any other photographer, once you get used to all the navigating.

ALSO this is a camera where you can customize the background of your screen! you can have a wallpaper of a picture or change the color.

Former Sony A100 user never was quite happy with the Sony quality overall after 3 yrs.

I decided to become a Canon Gal this past September 09!

Now there is no turning back!

I use my equipment professionally and for personal as well.

I can’t wait to upgrade in 2 yrs for the 5DMII cause if the results from a crop are this good I can imagine with the full frame!

Hey, Canon fans! If you’re like me, you have put off buying this camera because it costs a bit more than the Rebel line. When you weigh the camera differences against the cost difference, I promise you that the 50D will come out on top. I previously have owned two Rebels. The kit lens (28-135mm USM IS) is very good also. I may never be able to afford Canon’s outstanding L-series lenses, but the Canon lenses I do have are Image Stabilized and work perfect for me. The camera is built like a tank and is a little bigger and heavier than the Rebels, but that ends up making the camera feel better in my hands, and I am of average build. The 50D is packed with pro features plus Live View, and is more light sensitive than any other camera I have owned. Amazon had the best price and they had it in my hot little hands in just a few days! Outstanding camera. Outstanding price. Outstanding company… Amazon!!! You may regret putting off this purchase any longer.

I did a lot of comparison between so many DSLR camera around this price and even bought a Canon EOS 1000D in the beginning.

I also had the Nikon D40, which was pathetic and disappointing.

This 50D does not disappoint at all.

Robust build quality, decent portability, great battery life, amazing features, image quality, not to mention the admission to join the biggest used camera stuff: lenses, etc.

For this kind of price, it will beat anything else out there: Sony, Pentax, Nikon, etc.

The higher ISO is actually quite amazing, compared to the newer 7D, it only losses after Extended ISO (12800>)

Enough said about this camera, if you’re not planning to do any HD filming then save $700 and get this instead of the new 7D.

I am now just returning to the SLR type of camera after many years of using a simpler point and shoot type. My current point and shoot camera was a Canon, so I began my investigation with the Canon line of dSLR cameras. My first effort was to go by the local “brick and mortar” stores to get some “hands on” feel. After looking at a variety of other cameras, it soon became evident that the T1i was the camera that would best fit my needs as a very active amateur photographer. The factors that caused me to choose this camera: very good feel in my hand; easy to see and to use controls; a very large 15.1 MP picture size; 3.5 fps speed which fit nicely into the type of pictures I wanted to take; a good price point to reenter the SLR arena; Canon’s reputation in the dSLR field; my experience with former Canon cameras as well as with a currently owned Canon HD movie camera; the availability of a large variety of Canon lenses as well as their prices. In the 30 days that I have owned this camera, I have taken over 1,200 shots. The camera has lived up to all of the expectations that I have come to expect from Canon cameras and look forward to using this camera for many years to come.

The Canon Rebel T1i is my first DSLR and it’s a good beginners DSLR. It consists of a little bit of everything. ISO isn’t the best but enough to shoot in low light. [it does get noisy anything higher than ISO 800] The interface is easy to get used to. The price was unbeatable at the time I bought it!

I’ve always loved photography and wanted an SLR for 15+ years. When the digitals came out, I knew I needed one but the quality was nowhere near film. After about 10 years of the digitals being out, the quality/price ratio has finally become acceptable to me. I started looking and was set to buy the XSi. Right when I was about to buy the XSi, the T1i with HD VIDEO and a host of other features was announced. I held off again until the price on the T1i was to where I wanted it.

I love this camera. The PQ is amazing and I can get so many new and dramatic shots with the versatility. I’ve joined an online Canon Photography forum and received a ton of help and inspiration. The automatic modes work but why would you buy an SLR and use the auto-modes? The only problem with the camera is I’m going to have to blow a ton of money on lenses. Oh well.

I am an advanced beginner. Have a Nikon D50 and the D300s is an addition and an upgrade – tried some shooting indoors with it – terrific results. Great camera! Still learning to use it fully though…If my experience with the D50 is any indication, then the D300s will also be fulfilling and satisfying!

4 Stars D300s Medium Range Prosumer
this review is for the average person wanting to upgrade from the D40/D5000

With it’s magnesium alloy inner body and rubber sealed buttons, this camera is an excellent piece of equipment for wildlife photography when paired wig the correct lens.

It is well constructed in the areas that it needs to be strong but quite honesly there are some places on the camera tha have been reduced in quality to cut costs such as the switches, buttons, or the flash release. Those components are higher quality on the D90 to be honest wh you.

Speaking of the D90, this camera has the exact same sensor as the D90. I lke to think of the D300s as a D90 with features and processing from the D3. This camera can shoot 720p motion JPEG based AVI video from a Live View mode activated by a dedicated button. This camera does have a 51 point auto focus system and color 1005 pixel light metering.

Now the ugly truth. If you put this camera next to a D90 in the same conditions, the D90 will out perform this camera in low light. If the D300s is used past ISO 3200 it produces the most horrid smuged and noisy pictures I have seen. The D90 with all of it’s “auto help the novice processing” will help you out and rescue your photos the best it can. The D300s is a professional APS-C camera which means it won’t help you out like that. You absolutly cannot take pictures in inadequate light without the proper equipment.

I would go with the D90 if you want a decent camera that will produce sharp pictures without all of the fuss. With the money you save you can get the AF-S 18-200 VRI. That comes in the D300s kit. If you must absolutly have the pro features such as wired remotes, flash box control, and so on go with the D300s.

5 Stars Nikon D300s 12MP
After much research I moved from a Nikon D70s to the D300s. I was very happy with the D70s however I needed a larger pixel count for the large prints I prefer to make (13×19″+). I agree with many pro’s that have advised that you don’t need more than 8MP if you are producing 8×10′s or even 11×14 full frame in most cases. If you go beyond that print size or crop severely for 11×14′s, then a larger pixel count is where you need to be.

The D300s has been a perfect camera for me. I certainly put it in the prosumer category. It should not be your first camera. If you shoot mostly Auto or like to point and shoot, the D300s is not for you even if you have the money. It is very full-featured/complex camera and to get good pictures and your money’s worth you need to be willing to invest the time to learn its many modes and capabilities. It is capable of shooting great pictures in very low light or in fast moving scenes with its wide ISO range, very low noise and advanced focus system. The ergonomics feel just right to me unlike many Canons I have tried. It has good balance and a very solid feel (metal frame). I shoot often with a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR that is heavy and a good grip and balance is important for me.

I have found the color and resolution to be superb. I easily get professional (saleable) 13 x19″ prints working through Lightroom 2.5 and Photoshop CS4 to a Canon Pro 9000 MkII printer. The D300s’ many focus, white balance and color modes are a great help in a rapidly changing shoot. I have programmed several custom settings for both studio and outdoor work. Its great to be able to shift multiple camera settings with one button push. The “Info” button alone should keep you from buying the D300 vs D300s.

The dual memory card setup is also great. I switch between using the second card as a backup for important shoots to using it in overflow mode when I’m out for a long shoot. I shoot RAW most of the time and the safety of the overflow mode keeps me in the shooting flow so I don’t have to stop, lose the mood and change memory cards. I often add a power grip when I’m using multi-Speedlight set-ups with a remote commander. The Nikon Remote Commander can draw down the main battery over the course of a long studio shoot. Otherwise the battery will easily do a full day and hundreds of shots. The Info button instantly shows you battery condition as a % in both the main and power grip. Nice upgrade so you don’t have to look at a little battery icon and guess.

I am very happy with the D300s and highly recommend it if you are looking for a solid, pro-level camera. It has performed flawlessly for me. Amazon (B&H Photo) remains perfect for me with great price and on time delivery.

5 Stars Nikon D300s: a great camera (but you need to read the manual)
I have been using this camera for a couple of weeks and taken about 5000 exposures. This camera is great; however, it took me a little while to figure out the autofocus (AF) system. I switched from Canon because I truly do not like the size of their files (18MP is way beyond what I need). I like shooting when the subjects are in motion–not necessarily action–and learning how to focus properly is crucial for me. After reading the manual and playing around with the AF, I feel much better with the D300S. I am not new to photography–started with Minolta SLRs and then moved to Canon dSLRs–but I can safely say that the D300S has allowed me to take my best shots. I am still a bit reluctant to use the 6400 ISO, but the 3200 ISO works fine.

This camera is not for beginners. If you are not familiar with photography lingo, reading the manual would be frustrating. Moreover, the Program Mode is not the greatest. The video feature is dandy, but you have to keep the camera still. I have used the video feature a couple of times, and the image quality is fine as long as you use a tripod and don’t move the camera too much. In my opinion, the video recorded with this camera needs a lot of editing, and I don’t really have much practice editing videos.

In sum, this camera is a great buy for those who enjoy taking the time to take pictures. I would not recommend this to a first-time dSLR buyer, an inexperienced/casual photographer, or someone who wants to shoot video.

5 Stars Nice improvements over my D300
I upgraded from a Nikon D300 to the D300S mainly for the video capability. The video produced is not super HD quality, but I didn’t expect that. The video is actually quite good especially if you use a tripod and it allows me to travel without a dedicated video camera. The other improvements have proved to be fun and useful. I like the new door over the data cards, easier to use that the D300 lever. The new location of the live view button is very convenient, the extra frame per second is useful and the focusing and image quality seem marginally beter than the D300. The rocker switch on the back has tactile feedback which is better. All in all I am very happy to have upgraded. The service from Amazon was fabulous. I ordered the camera on Sunday, it was shipped (free of charge) on Monday and I had it in my hand a couple of days later. After I ordered on Sunday the price dropped $75.00 on Monday. I called customer service on Monday and they agreed to credit my VISA account with the $75.00 difference. You can’t beat that! cm

3 Stars Canon XS is adequate
I purchased the Canon XS as a Christmas present for my wife. But after playing around with it myself, decided to return it and purchase the XSi instead. Three reasons why…1) 3″ vs 2.5″ display. I think this makes a big difference. I shoot semi-pro with some 40D bodies and appreciate the extra 0.5″ of screen myself. 2) Spot metering. This feature is not on the XS and I really miss it since I tend to shoot in manual mode a lot. 3) The biggest reason is the proximity sensor for the LCD. This is huge! I use the Rebels to shoot at night when I don’t want to bring the big bodies. When shooting at night, the display on the LCD stays on with the XS; on the XSi as your face gets close to the viewfinder, it shuts off, then turns on again after you move away from it. Shooting at night with the bright LCD is a big distraction.

There are other differences such as the higher resolution and other stuff that really didnt factor in. If you’re deciding on XS vs XSi, get the XSi. Now if you’re going from P&S to SLR and need the very basics, then the XS will fit your needs perfectly. For those people, I would highly recommend the XS.

4 Stars Great dLSR for a good price
I’m still learning about all of the camera’s possibilities. Got some great stop-motion pictures of small birds and dogs. Picture quality is excellent.

I did a lot of research before I bought this camera. I don’t find the focus dots to be a problem. I like the controls on the right side, they’re easy to operate and the camera fits my hand just fine.

There were a few reviews talking about the camera getting damp and never operating again. To prevent condensation, I follow the Canon recommendation of removing the lens from the body when coming in from the cold to a warm room. I’ve even done it (carefully) after getting back into a warm car. The camera and lens don’t take long to warm up.

This is one of the lightest dSLRs on the market, a real plus when adding a telephoto lens.

5 Stars Bought for the speed
Those of you upgrading from a Point and Shoot camera can relate to the lag time between photos. We got so tired of waiting for our PNS to spool up to take another photo we finally upgraded to this DSLR. Wish I had done it 3 years ago. This Rebel is so easy to use and the pictures are great and best of all it is super fast. I am a total Neophyte when it comes to cameras; I just want a good picture. This product delivers and I think the cost is spot on.

5 Stars I LOVE THIS CAMERA
I was going back and forth whether to purchase a DSLR camera that is more than a point n shoot as a non professional and I absolutely love this camera. I wanted a camera that I can take pictures of my baby and not miss that smile. The point n shoots are too slow and I have no pictures of her smiling- well I can not say that any longer- I am able to capture all the smiles. The camera handles wonderful and I have no complaints. I bought this camera on a special day from Amazon and was able to save more money. I would recommend this camera to anyone that wants to move away from the point n shoot and be able to capture all the important memories.

I am now just returning to the SLR type of camera after many years of using a simpler point and shoot type. My current point and shoot camera was a Canon, so I began my investigation with the Canon line of dSLR cameras. My first effort was to go by the local “brick and mortar” stores to get some “hands on” feel. After looking at a variety of other cameras, it soon became evident that the T1i was the camera that would best fit my needs as a very active amateur photographer. The factors that caused me to choose this camera: very good feel in my hand; easy to see and to use controls; a very large 15.1 MP picture size; 3.5 fps speed which fit nicely into the type of pictures I wanted to take; a good price point to reenter the SLR arena; Canon’s reputation in the dSLR field; my experience with former Canon cameras as well as with a currently owned Canon HD movie camera; the availability of a large variety of Canon lenses as well as their prices. In the 30 days that I have owned this camera, I have taken over 1,200 shots. The camera has lived up to all of the expectations that I have come to expect from Canon cameras and look forward to using this camera for many years to come.

The Canon Rebel T1i is my first DSLR and it’s a good beginners DSLR. It consists of a little bit of everything. ISO isn’t the best but enough to shoot in low light. [it does get noisy anything higher than ISO 800] The interface is easy to get used to. The price was unbeatable at the time I bought it!

4 Stars First DSLR
I’ve always loved photography and wanted an SLR for 15+ years. When the digitals came out, I knew I needed one but the quality was nowhere near film. After about 10 years of the digitals being out, the quality/price ratio has finally become acceptable to me. I started looking and was set to buy the XSi. Right when I was about to buy the XSi, the T1i with HD VIDEO and a host of other features was announced. I held off again until the price on the T1i was to where I wanted it.

I love this camera. The PQ is amazing and I can get so many new and dramatic shots with the versatility. I’ve joined an online Canon Photography forum and received a ton of help and inspiration. The automatic modes work but why would you buy an SLR and use the auto-modes? The only problem with the camera is I’m going to have to blow a ton of money on lenses. Oh well.

5 Stars Great camera
This is a great video camera. It is not HD but the picture quality is excellent. The colors are great and the images are very sharp. I have worked in video production for the past 8 years and I can tell you that I have always been pretty disappointed by the quality of most consumer cameras. The canon FS200 however, far exceeded my expectations. This is by far the best camera you can get in this price range. The only draw back that I have found is that it doesn’t do the best in low light conditions, this however, is true for every consumer camera in and beyond this price range. I would recommend this camera to anyone who is looking for high quality visuals but does not want to venture into the world of HD.

5 Stars problem with MOD extention SOLVED
Just happy with my new purchase. I was reading others review and see they have problem with MOD extention, I had this problem too but no longer, I have tried many different software today to convert it to AVI or MPG ( include SDcopy) but I did something funny and that was easiest and couldn’t believe how easy was solution.

All I do to convert MOD files is to change .mod to .MPG or .AVI manually, I mean just rename extention to another format and it will work!!!

this a camera is crap. I just bought it and have been trying to make it work for 4 days now. Problems:

the $[...] digital camera that also takes video had way better video quality.

the camera and the software that comes with it doesn’t work with a mac

you need to have every cable hook up at once to import video 2 power cords and the usb (it’s annoying when your infront of your home computer imposible anywhere else)

MOD files suck nothing opens them and you have to two or three steps to convert them into mpg or mov ( with all the damn wires everywhere )

the only reason I bought this camera was because it has an external mic port. but so what if the camera is, well it feels deliberatly annoying.

1 Star Incompatible video format
This would have been a winner hands down for the one feature that it has that every other camcorder in it’s price range lacks, an audio input jack for external microphone. Every other camcorder in it’s price range had neglected the need for good audio.

But, the video format, according to another reviewer, is not compatible with most professional editing software. Sorry. FAIL.

I did a lot of research and decided the best route for me was to stay with a standard format rather than HD do to the additional expense of having to buy a newer DVD player and a more powerful computer. The software is not great but works…not very intuitive. Once I figured out the software burning a movie is easy and looks great played on my upconverting DVD player and viewed on my LCD TV.

In a nut shell (based on cameras in this price range):

* Great picture quality, especially if you know how to manipulate Raw format – software is included

* On the small side of DSLRs – can be a pro or con depending on your use

* Included software to control the camera with a computer is a major plus for me

* Lens is good for being included in a kit at this price, one of the best IMHO.

* Read online professional reviews. Really helpful for me.

* You can’t go wrong with a Canon DSLR

* This is a great entry level DSLR, if you can afford it and want more Megapixels and features, jump up to an XSi or TSi.

* battery life is good – but get a spare just incase

The Long Winded Stuff:

I am a Canon snob ever since my first digital camera, which was a point and shoot Canon S30 3.2 MP I paid over $500.00 for. That S30 took better pictures (as far as quality) than my wife’s Minolta 6 MP DSLR that I bought her years later. I must have bought at least 10 point and shoots and DSLRs for my family and work. All different brands. But every time I didn’t buy a Canon I was upset with the purchase. There have been some good Nikons but none better than the Canons. My biggest disapointment was the Minolta DSLR I bought for my wife. Against my better judgement the guy at the camera store talked me into it.

There are more qualified sites and people on the internet that will give you great professional reviews of the camera and all it’s features. Here is a few reasons I chose this one:

I was contemplating between the XS, XSi or TSi. I did a lot of research online before making my decision and in the end the price won out and I settled for a less megapixels and less $$$ (10.1 is plenty for what I needed). Like all Canon DSLRs this camera takes great photos and the kit lens that it comes with is a great lens for a DSLR in this price range. The body is on the small side and people with large hands may find it uncomfortable if they are taking pictures constently. But the small size also has the benefit of better portability.

Besides the picture quality, my favorite feature is that it comes with the software to control the camera and most of it’s features right from your computer. I actually use this feature a lot, because I do product pictures and indoor still life with it. I can set all aspects of the shot, aperature, sharpness, shooting mode, white balance, etc, then control the shutter right from the computer. The picture loads right to my computer, I can examine the shot adjust the raw photo or make any adjustments necessary and retake the photo without relying on the small LCD screen on the camera. The liveshot helps even more because I can view the shot live as I am setting up before I take the picture. Other copmpanies charge more $$$ for this benefit. I like to use Raw format and make adjustments then convert it to a user friendly format. If your not familiar with the Raw format, it is worth your time to do some research and learn about it, your pictures will be much better.

I recently purchased the Rebel XS as a Christmas present for my wife and myself, and we both love it. We mostly use the auto modes. We are not advanced photographers. We mostly just take pictures of our baby daughter. But it has done great for that. We love that when you press the shutter button, it take the photo immediately, unlike with point’n'shoots. And when I want to have more manual control, it is easy. For a beginner, it is everything we need and more. Can’t comment on more advanced use because we don’t know enough to use more advanced features

After having it for a couple of days, I can say that the image quality on just the auto shots are amazing. I bought the book for “dummies” for the xs to help with the advanced exposure options. But for now the auto is damn good. Then again I’m coming from a point and shoot.
