5 Stars Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8
This lens was recommended by an underwater photographer who takes awesome pictures. I had also read reviews stating this is a great lens for every day use. I am very impressed with the picture quality and the fact that I don’t have to get as close to the subject to get a great macro shot.

5 Stars Very pleased with this lens
I was frustrated with low light shooting situations, don’t care for flash much, so this was my choice. This lens is the one that just stays on my D5000 body. Travel shots, catching the grandkids at play or whatever, it is the most universal lens I could ask for. It is super fast to focus, produces razor sharp images and the weight helps steady things a bit. I also wanted the new 70-200mm F2.8, but I know I will do more shooting in this range than any other. I love it.

1 Star pronounced front focus on wide end
The copy of the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 lens that I received exhibited gross front focus. The front focus was so severe that no special testing was needed to see the effect. The problem started to decrease after approximately 36mm, but continued throughout the remainder of the focal length. Because the front focus was more pronounced toward the wide end and less severe at 70mm, the use of the fine tune feature in my D300 would only correct one end or the other. I took the lens to a local store and found the problem reproducible with a D300s body. Auto focus or manual focus gave the same results. The problem was the same irrespective of focus point used. I only tried the single shot method, as I rarely use the continuous shooting mode. I had back focus issues with two Canon 5D bodies and the Canon 24-70L f2.8 lens. After sending both bodies and the 24-70L lens to Canon repair facility several times and not getting the back focus issue resolved, I gave up on Canon and switched to Nikon. It has been an unhappy experience so far with Nikon. BTW, I have the LensAlign to test a lens for front/back focus. However, the problem with the Nikon lens was so severe that it was first easily observed in real world picture taking situation. I did use the LensAlign, which showed a front focus issue as well.

Update (December 14, 2009): The lens was exchanged. Unfortunately, the replacement lens was worse for front focus. Besides the D300 body that I own, I tried the replacement lens on two D700 bodies, one D200 body, and one D3 body. The front focus was present with all of the tested bodies. I own five other Nikon lenses and none exhibit front focus problem. One lens out of the five (50mm f1.4) does show ever-so-slight back focus. I also have an inexpensive 12-year old 24-135mm variable aperture third party lens. This lens is not as sharp as the Nikon lenses that I own, however, there are no focusing issues with this lens at all. A brief look at some of the forums online will show that this is not an isolated case. In the end, I would say that this lens is finely crafted and the zoom ring is silky smooth. It takes very sharp pictures, only the focus is about five feet in front of the target that is used to focus (16 feet away)! I have been a Nikon fan since the F3 body days. However, my one-star rating stands mainly due to the fact that this type of quality control is unacceptable in light of the relative cost of the optic.

4 Stars Fantastic, but watch out for quality control
I purchased this lens about 8 months ago. I shoot a D300 with grip. I have traveled to a variety of places and taken some amazing pictures with it. The lens is very versatile in a landscape and portrait setting. There are some times when I wish I was carrying a 14-24mm however, as a main lens for travel and portrait photography it’s fantastic. Additionally, the auto focus is quiet and precise when coupled with manual focus point use. The zoom is smooth and precise as well.

With all that said, there has been one inexcusable flaw and the subsequent fix for this was unacceptable.

After shooting a panorama at the top of a mountain at very small apertures, I found blemishes in all of the photos. It turns out that from the time that I purchased it to when I took those photos (about 1 week) some sort of internal material had collected on the inside of the rear element. As such I had about 60 photos that needed to be corrected.

Returning to the states, I was told that I would have to send the lens back to a processing center. This in my opinion is grudgingly acceptable, however the policy should have been to replace not repair. The final straw was being told to pay the return shipping and the packaging fee. After spending nearly $2,000 for a lens and finding a flaw the hard way, I would expect at the very least the burden would be on the manufacturer and/or supplier to correct their issue.

I purchased this product from Bromfield Camera Co. in Boston. I had hoped to support a local business, but it seems one simply pays more for the same level of service that you’d get from an online shop.

In closing, inspect the rear element before purchase and during early use – also, take a few blank shots of a white object at f/22 to see if there is an internal contamination for the first few weeks of use.

5 Stars Amazing — Sharp — Solid
I’ve owned this lens for about a month. I’ve owned lots of lenses. I’ve owned lots of SLR’s. Slid this baby onto my D700 when I got it and blew off several dozen frames. I immediately liked the feel in my hands. Solid. Smooth. A tank of a lens. Even the lens hood snaps into place with a definitive button snap. This shade won’t fall off accidentally. Everything was just right. Even comes with a belt/shoulder strap case should you ever make the mistake of taking this lens off the camera.

Turned on the camera and the lens springs to life. Shot several dozen frames around the building. Scenes that were pretty challenging. Hoped to find some meaningful improvements over the images I’ve been shooting. It feels good. Focus was snappy and amazingly quiet. Focus was precise. Focus was decisive. View finder was bright. Balance was very, very good. Burned off a few dozen frames and everything just felt right. Like it never had before.

Of course, the tale is not in the feel of the lens, but in the images. Popped the CF card into the computer tonight, fired up Capture NX2, and started loading images. Wow. I’m really taken aback. I really am.

The focus was sharp, sharp, sharp. After color-correcting for the poor/challenging lighting I had been in, the colors jumped to life. The details were razor. The textures velvety. The depth of field precise. The inflatable bags that had surrounded the box in the shipping carton were soft and cushy on the screen. The cardboard box was cold and cardboardy. The bar code label from the box stood out in gentle relief from the surface of the box. Droplets in a water bottle on the table were wet on the screen. Wow. Just “WOW.” What a joy this lens is already. Really. Really.

I’ve had the lens about a month now. Just got back from Phipps Conservatory where I shot most of the morning. This lens is fabulous. Razor sharp. Sharp, sharp, sharp. And the colors were deep and pure and vivid. No distortion at the corners. Depth of field was spot on.

I can’t recommend this lens enough. I’ve used higher end off brand lenses. And I’ve used lower end to mid Nikon. Always preferred the Nikon. They just worked well and created an image that looked real and consistent. But now… This is the lens. Just wow. If you’re on the fence, get off the fence. This is it. If your pictures aren’t what you’re looking for with this lens, it is not the lens.

4 Stars Great lens overall
This is not a 5 star for me. Here are the reasons: very heavy, no VR, and very expensive. For this price there should be VR, that is the biggest negative I can say about the lens. But if you want a top notch walking around lens with very good optics and zoom flexibility, then this fits the bill. To be honest a 50mm f1.4 lens is of the same quality or better sharpness-wise than this lens, but the 50mm gives you NO flexibility when shooting different things. Thats why I got this lens. In most other areas the 50mm f1.4 is better because it is much lighter, cheaper, and the much larger F stop kicks butt in low light which this lens just can’t match with f2.8. don’t get me wrong, f2.8 is great, but f1.4 is MUCH better for low light and backgound blur….but like I said there is zero flexibility with the 50mm lens. So it really depends on you if this 24-70 lens is right. I am going to keep and use my 24-70 all the time. It will probably be my main lens, but mostly for its 24-70 flexibility. If I just wanted pure clarity/sharpness and low light performance then a 50mm f1.4 is the lens to get. but we all know 1 lens is never the ultimate solution for everything. So check the 24-70 out and see if the weight is an issue or not. I can tell you on a D700 body with a SB800 flash this lens get VERY heavy VERY quick. That is not a “all day” walking around setup. So far sharpness has been on par with my prime 50mm, which is high praise. F2.8 is still pretty good for separation of subject from background. Overall a great lens. So good luck. Hope this helps.

4 Stars A few additions to the 5star reviews
This is my first DSLR purchase since I was tired of the limitations of most P&S cameras – slow and poor in low level lighting. My Canon 3mp from 2002 made excellent prints up to 8×10 and had manual features but was bound to break or wear out – it did.

Image quality, handling, build quality, etc all good as mentioned in the 5 star reviews. I bought this when the price finally hit my buy point (under $500) with one of those pre Christmas coupons (they needed to move the white and red models). At the $600 price level I was going to wait for the next version. Got it and am happy with it for the price.

My main interest in this camera (color option was not of much concern) was to be able to reuse some manual focus aperture priority lens that I used with my 70s model Pentax ME film camera. They work and make awesome pictures but the camera does not read the manually set aperture selection as on the ME – does not get recorded with the picture and you have to look at the lens (or get good counting clicks) to know your setting. The manual focus was easier to view on the ME but at least you can use the live view zoom focus or listen for beeping or look for the focus indicator. It will set the shutter for you if in auto mode or P or A mode just like the ME but with the auto ISO selection to further fine tune the picture.

HD movie mode was also of interest but assumed it would be secondary – it is. Even with shake reduction off, it still records every tiny noise the camera makes. The mic is very sensitive. It will come in handy from time to time but would not base a purchase on that feature.

Some people complain of the autofocus point not being visible in the viewfinder – I tend to use point focus and am still experimenting with auto exposure options. Not quite excellent but can’t really complain – yet.

The Kx buttons I guess are typical for a DSLR and are so nice to have compared to most P&S. The Green button looks like it will come in handy once I get used to having it – quick reset of some overrides.

The auto mode makes this DSLR handle like a P&S only faster. The autofocus in low light tends to search a bit more than my Canon P&S especially in low light but manual override is easy. Once in auto, I could hand this camera to most anyone to take decent pictures.

I recommend to get this camera at a lower price (<$500) or wait for the next version. If you are not planning to use more lenses than this kit lens you probably will be better off with the newer Canon or Panasonic "low light" P&S cameras currently priced around $400 or less.

5 Stars First time DSLR owner—-Very Happy !!
Bought this Baby in white back in Nov.12. All I can say is Wow! Very easy to use and the menus are straight forward. Buttons are well placed out. Camera was very compact (for a DSLR) compared to the ones I was comparing to (nikon d5000, Sony A330). I can actually just use one hand to set my settings.

Fast auto focus. Good picture quality. Tons of shooting modes available.

Never really had any problems with the battery issue even before I upgraded the firmware 1.01.

18-55 kit lens did a good job on our last Cruise vacation. I was averaging 280-320 shots on Eneloops 50% flash before the batt. meter turned orange with some cropping.

I recenty acquired a Prime lens D-XENOGON 35mm F2(ebay new) which is an actual clone of the famed and now discontinued Pentax 35mm f2. I thought my pictures were sharp with the lens kit but I recently shot this lens on my brothers wedding and OHhhh man, what a difference in picture sharpness and very outstanding color contrast. It just has that POP on every picture I’ve taken with this lens. Oh yeah…Took 752 shots, 98% with Flash that day before it shut down with Eneloops of course.

All in all. I’m very impressed with my Kx. Now paired up with my Prime, it’s an unbeatable combo (for now).

Sony, Canon, Nikon—watch out.

5 Stars Overall Great Value
After looking through a lot of options this camera seems to offer the best combination of price performance.

Some first impressions are:

1. Good Hi Iso Performance with little noise. (Much better then Canon Xt then I used to own that only had 1600 max iso.)

2. Able to do HD Video (720p).

Video quality is ok, I compared it to my sony SR-12 HD camcoder its definitely not the same quality but it does have a unique movie type look to it, in low light its very grainy but in good light it does fine. Its a good back up to a camcoder, although you do have to get used to manual focusing to get good results. If you shoot a lot of movies get a bigger memory card, I have a 4 gig card and it only holds around 15 minutes of video in highest quality due to recording format.

3. First thing to do when you get the camera make sure you update the firmware to 1.01 that will solve the battery issue that many people been having. You can check which firmware you have by pressing the menu button and then turning the camera on.

So far a I took about 900 pictures and about 45 minutes of video on lithium batteries that came with the camera and only now the battery indicator shows orange.

4. As with any DSLR auto mode will not give you the best results, and every camera has its own “favorite” settings where it gets most consistent results. So far Im still figuring out what works best with this particular camera.

5. No camera is perfect but to me Good Hi Iso performance, Hd video option and price. Make it 5 stars.

5 Stars Pentax k-x: great little camera / camcorder
Great little camera! Kit lens is very good for a kit lens with sharp images and good colors. Not as good as say my Tamron 18-75 f2.8, but the kit is quite a bit lighter and smaller in size. The camera focuses fast (much faster than my k20d)and accurately and with the 40mm f2.8 limited lens, it’s even quicker. Video quality is excellent. Very nice to have image stabilization to steady my vids. The real revelation of the k-x: shooting with high ISO is just amazing at how clean the images are with good detail.

I thought that going from a semi-pro cam (the k20d) to the k-x would be a big step back, but the controls are intuitive and well laid out, so no problems at all. Having both cameras will be amazing… the k20 will be for landscape and outdoor shots while the k-x will provide another focal length and allow me to capture more opportunities in higher iso situations or where I need a higher frame rate.

Excellent camera that deserves all the accolades it’s getting from the critics.

5 Stars great camera in a small package
the k-x is the camera i’ve been waiting for. it delivers exceptionally well in low-light situations. it offers the user many choices, ranging from full auto mode to manual mode. it is possible to record in raw and jpeg at the same time. for those who are more advanced and demanding, one can choose from among options such as no noise reduction, digital filters, iso range from 100 to 12800, etc.

the battery issue was non-existent for me. the batteries shipped with the camera worked immediately. when they were finally exhausted, four duracell alkalines worked fine – but it is important to let the camera sit for a minute or two first after changing batteries.

my other cameras include a panasonic fz-18, a leica d-lux-4, and a ricoh cx-1, among others. i also have an *ist ds. i continue to use them all off and on, but the k-x has become the one i reach for when i hope for the most flexibility and the best results. i will never be a serious photographer, but i will enjoy photography much more with the k-x. definitely an excellent value.

Canon EF 100mm f 2 8 Macro USM Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

no comments

Canon EF 100mm f 2 8 Macro USM Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

This telephoto macro lens is capable of focusing to life-size (1X) without attachments. Although it replaces the EF 100mm f/2.8 macro lens, it is a completely new design. It incorporates a ring-type USM giving quiet, high-speed autofocus. The full-time mechanical manual focus gives very smooth manual focusing. For the first time in a 1X focusing telephoto macro lens, inner focusing is used. The lens length remains constant and a long working distance of 149mm makes worrying about getting too close to the subject unnecessary. Also, during focusing the front ring does not rotate making use of front-mounting accessories like macro ring lites simple and effective. “Three-group floating” focusing construction uses three independently moving groups, which holds focusing-related changes of aberrations to a minimum giving excellent image quality all the way from infinity to life size.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars I use this for nature close-ups…
…but it’ll work for portraits. It’s as sharp as the more expensive a 24-70L lens and its color rendition is nearly as good. I’ve loaned it to budding photographers who have used kit lenses only and they can’t believe the image quality. Some of my best photos have come from this lens.

5 Stars Awsome Lens!!
One of my favorites. I tried the 50 and 100mm macros before buying the 100 and I couldn’t be happier. I take a lot of pics of flowers and bees and the extra reach of the 100mm allows me to get the good shot without scaring off the bees.

5 Stars What a great Lens!
Image from this lens is superior, deep and field come incredible and very sharp pictures. The macro allow you to take very small objects…almost every picture I take with this lens come out as high quality wallpaper.

It’s a little bulky but this is what you can expect considering the optics involved.

Highly recommended.

5 Stars My favorite lens!!!
First, I shoot with a Canon 40D and am an on-location photographer of families and children. I also love shooting nature and “things” – close ups of rust, the curve of a bench chair, dew on clematis, etc…

This lens is amazing for my purposes! At 2.8 I can follow playful toddlers around in a variety of lighting conditions and still get the shot. And for posed portraits, the bokeh is amazing, people have never looked so good! So overall, I prefer this lens to my 70-200 f4 L, even though I can’t zoom and have to move myself to compose shots. But the lower f-stop, the tack-sharp images, the ability to shoot macro, the weight (it seems lighter and less bulky than my 70-200), all tip the scale in the 100mm’s favor.

If you were considering the 70-200 f4 and decide to get the 100mm, you might want to consider picking up the “nifty fifty” 1.8 – another prime lens, and quite inexpensive too, but one of my FAVORITES, so versatile, I just love it. You can get wonderful dof effects by shooting things up close – the eyelashes of a child, an engagement ring perched on a newborn’s foot, the stamens of a lily….plus it lets you shoot group shots indoors with relative ease….

Anyway, back to the 100mm – a great investment, I use this lens all the time and it is fantastic.

4 Stars Great lens for the price!
I am an advanced amateur. I bought this Canon lens to round out my array of lenses for my Rebel XSi. I was interested in taking macro shots of bugs and other small objects, plus have the capability of a portrait lens. I haven’t had it for very long and I haven’t taken a lot of pictures yet, but it is impressive in its sharpness and accurate focusing. It focuses to .9 foot but you have to have a steady hand since it doesn’t have IS. Construction is solid (notice the weight) and all focusing is internal, so the barrel doesn’t move in and out. This is a great feature for macro images.

I recommend it highly but if I had the extra money I would go for the Canon 100mm macro lens with IS. That is the only reason I gave it a 4.0 rating.
