5 Stars A Fine Flash, But Pretty Big
This Nikon unit certainly does its job. It is very well-made and solid with lots of adjustments possible. However, for an amateur such as myself it is probably more flash than I will ever use. I also have a Nikon SB400 Flash, a much smaller, lighter and less expensive device, which serves my needs well. What I am trying to say is that one should carefully consider one’s planned uses before buying. Regardless of this, the SB600 is a fine flash and for those who need its many capabilities it can’t be beaten. Buy it and enjoy it!
5 Stars Great!
I just got into some flash photography and lighting situations. This light is great and definitely puts off enough flash to share around! I can’t complain about this. I’ll definitely be buying an SB900 so I can use that as a commander and use my SB600 as a slave since you can’t do that by itself.
4 Stars Very Happy With Purchase
This was my second flash purchase. My first was an SB-400 which I like for it’s portability. The SB 600 is much more versatile and has a lot more to offer. If you are going to purchase one flash, the SB-600 would be the one I would start with.
I have achieved amazing shots by bouncing light off walls and ceilings. I like that the SB-600 can swivel and tilt the flash head. It allows me to bounce light in from any aspect ration’s composition.
The flash also fires and recycles very quickly.
It comes with a decent case. I wish it had a compartment for the Stofen diffuser.
I would repeat this purchase and order a Stofen diffuser at the same time if you get the SB-600 flash.
Why only 4 stars? I think they could have made the off camera use easier. I have found the directions for working the flash off camera confusing. I have been able to make it work. It could be a lot more user friendly. Off camera lighting opens up great opportunities in photography.
4 Stars Fits my needs with auto functions
It is much easier to do nice pictures indoor also in big halls with this flash. Much better then with internal flash on my D300. Zooming function works also well. I need to practice bounce flash more but for direct use for example on objects that are far away or use in a big rooms it works well. In short distance it could be little softer or I would recommend additional diffuser even I didn’t try any by myself (it has builtin 14mm wide angle diffuser which is quite ok)
5 Stars Excellent starter flash!
I have a Nikon D60, and its little built-in flash can’t quite keep up with the photography I do (shooting in dark hotel lobbies, homes, et cetera). What a difference this SB-600 flash makes!
The AF grid that the flash projects (IR, so it’s not visible) really helps my camera focus in lower light conditions. It still has trouble with some things, like mascot costume faces (where is the face? confused!), but it’s still an improvement over not using the SB-600.
I may want to get the SB-800 at some point, but I’m happy for now!
